Driveway Pinpoint Test
Park on flat ground, engine off. Reach through the wheel spokes and run a finger across the rotor face β you should feel smooth, flat metal. If you feel a ridge, groove deep enough to catch a fingernail, or can see a shiny patch alternating with a dull patch around the rotor face, that is uneven pad-material transfer (DTV) causing the shudder. Also note: does the shaking come mostly through the steering wheel (front rotors) or through the seat and floor (rear rotors)? A shop can confirm with a dial indicator measuring thickness variation around the rotor.

Continuing to drive with significant DTV glazes the brake pads and worsens the thickness variation. Within 5,000β10,000 miles you'll lose significant braking power; rotor cracking or caliper damage can turn a $300 job into a $900 repair.
