Is it safe to drive with: why does my car shake when braking??
Safety-critical system
This involves your brakes, steering, or suspension. A physical inspection by a professional mechanic is required before driving. Do not delay. These systems affect your ability to control the vehicle and protect everyone on the road.
⛔ This involves a safety-critical system
This symptom affects your brakes, steering, or suspension — systems that directly control your ability to handle the vehicle. Do not delay getting this inspected. If the symptom is severe or sudden, stop driving immediately and have the vehicle towed.
Stop driving immediately if you notice:
- Sudden loss of braking effectiveness or a spongy brake pedal
- The car pulling hard to one side or becoming difficult to steer
- Grinding, scraping, or clunking sounds that appear suddenly or worsen
- Any smoke, burning smell, or fluid under the vehicle
Most likely cause
Park on flat ground, engine off. Reach through the wheel spokes and run a finger across the rotor face — you should feel smooth metal. If you feel grooves deep enough to catch a fingernail, or the rotor looks scored with concentric rings, that confirms rotor wear. Also note: does the shaking come mostly through the steering wheel (front rotors) or through the seat and floor (rear rotors)?
