What it does

Brake pads are thick blocks of friction material (think: very dense sandpaper) bolted into a caliper that straddles the rotor. When you press the brake pedal, hydraulic pressure pushes the pads into both faces of the spinning rotor. The friction slows the rotor β€” and the car. Pads wear down with every stop. Most pads have a thin metal wear indicator strip embedded near the bottom: when the pad wears thin enough, that strip scrapes the rotor and makes the classic high-pitched squeal that tells you replacement time has arrived.

Watch out for

  • Caliper slide pins and bolts are often seized from rust β€” soak them in penetrating oil before trying to remove them
  • Never press the brake pedal with a caliper hanging loose β€” it can blow the piston out. Hang the caliper with a hook or bungee, don't let it dangle by the hose
  • If the rotor surface is scored or below minimum thickness, new pads alone won't fix a shaking or squealing brake β€” you need rotors too

How long do brake pads last?

Typically 30,000–70,000 miles. City driving (lots of stops) wears them faster than highway driving. Driving style matters more than the car β€” aggressive brakers can wear pads in 20,000 miles; gentle drivers might get 80,000+ miles.

What's the minimum pad thickness before I need to replace?

Anything under ΒΌ inch (about 3mm) of friction material is replacement time. At 2mm you'll hear the wear indicator squeal. At 1mm or less it's metal-on-metal grinding β€” your rotors are now being destroyed.

Should I replace front and rear brake pads at the same time?

Not necessarily β€” front pads do 60–70% of the stopping work and wear much faster than rear pads. Replace the axle that needs it. Always replace both wheels on the same axle together (both fronts or both rears) for even braking.

What type of brake pads should I buy β€” ceramic, metallic, or organic?

For most daily drivers, ceramic pads are the best choice: low dust, low noise, good stopping power. Semi-metallic pads run cooler under hard use (better for trucks and performance cars). Organic pads are quieter but wear fastest.
