How this compares to the industry averages

The most widely-cited car repair statistics are single averages: Kelley Blue Book / Cox Automotive puts the average repair order at $838, CarMD's Vehicle Health Index puts the average check-engine repair at $554, and BLS data shows vehicle-repair prices up roughly 43.6% since 2019.

Those figures are useful, but they collapse every repair into one number and say nothing about whether doing it yourself is worth it. Our 61-repair breakdown is the missing DIY-vs-shop layer underneath those averages: for every repair type, what does skipping the labor markup actually save you โ€” and where does it not?

The labor-hours lens

Across all 61 repairs in the dataset, shops bill a combined 140.5 hours of labor. Dividing the shop-vs-DIY dollar gap by tracked labor hours for each repair gives a rough implied effective labor + markup rate of $130/hour (median across repairs with recorded labor hours).

This is a rough figure, not a real shop labor rate. It blends true labor time with parts markup (OEM vs. aftermarket, shop parts sourcing) and diagnostic/overhead costs baked into the shop price, so it will run higher than a shop's quoted hourly rate. Treat it as a directional measure of "what you're paying per hour of avoided labor," not a wage figure.

Methodology

Figures come from eli5cars' hand-reviewed, editorially curated repair cost table โ€” the same underlying dataset behind the 2026 Repair Cost Index. Each figure represents a realistic U.S. national midpoint, not a quote from any single shop or region. Shop cost includes parts and labor at typical independent-shop rates. DIY cost assumes aftermarket (not OEM) parts at retail, and excludes the value of your time or any tools you may need to buy or rent.

Status: researched estimates, not yet crowdsourced. This is not a statistically sampled survey of real invoices โ€” it is an editorial estimate reviewed against common part and labor pricing. Actual prices can swing roughly ยฑ30โ€“40% depending on market, labor rates, vehicle make/model, and parts availability.

We're now collecting real invoices via the Fair Quote Checker โ€” future editions of this report will replace estimates with verified crowd data. Check your quote โ†’
