About eli5cars

Car problems explained like you're 5.

What we are

eli5cars is an independent consumer automotive information website. We exist for one reason: most car repair websites are written for mechanics, not for the person standing in a parking lot wondering why their car is making a noise they've never heard before.

We translate that experience — the strange noise, the dashboard light, the mystery code from AutoZone — into plain English. What are the 2 or 3 most likely causes? What's the simple driveway test you can do before calling a shop? What will it actually cost, both to DIY and to have a shop handle it?

The consumer-first approach

Every page on eli5cars is written from the perspective of the car owner, not the repair shop. That means:

  • We tell you when it's probably fine to wait — and when you absolutely should not drive the car before getting it looked at.
  • We give you honest cost ranges, not just shop-friendly estimates. We include the DIY cost when it's a realistic option for a non-mechanic.
  • We recommend the free OBD2 scan first — AutoZone, O'Reilly, and Advance Auto Parts will scan your car for free, no purchase required. Getting the exact error code before you spend money is almost always worth the 10-minute detour.
  • We are not a shop and do not earn money from repairs. We're an information site. Our incentive is to give you accurate information, not to up-sell you.

How content is produced

eli5cars pages are produced using a structured, research-driven process:

  1. Each symptom, OBD2 code, or maintenance topic is researched against publicly available automotive data sources, manufacturer service documentation, and commonly reported real-world experience.
  2. Suspects are ranked by actual real-world frequency, not by which cause sounds most dramatic or generates the most repair revenue.
  3. Driveway tests are selected specifically because they are safe for a non-mechanic to perform without specialized tools. We do not instruct readers to do anything involving open fuel systems, pressurized hot coolant, or high-voltage components.
  4. Safety-critical pages (brakes, steering, suspension) include a mandatory banner directing readers to professional inspection before driving — regardless of how benign the symptom might seem.

A note on accuracy and limitations: We are an independent information site, not an ASE-certified repair facility. We work to ensure accuracy, but automotive information is complex and vehicle-specific. Always verify safety-critical decisions with a licensed professional. If you spot an error, please let us know.

The VIN tool

The VIN lookup tool decodes your vehicle's year, make, model, trim, and engine from the 17-character Vehicle Identification Number stamped on your dash. We use the NHTSA vPIC public API — the same data source that powers the federal vehicle recall database. We do not store your VIN. See our Privacy Policy for details.

How we stay free

eli5cars is free to use and has no paywalls. We may earn a small commission through the Amazon Associates program if you purchase a product through a link on our site. We may also display advertising in the future. Our editorial content is not influenced by these commercial relationships — we link to parts and tools we believe are relevant to the repair discussed, not whatever pays the highest commission.

See our Affiliate & Advertising Disclosure for full details.

Independence

eli5cars is independently owned and operated. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any auto repair chain, parts retailer, manufacturer, or insurance company. Our recommendations are our own.
