What it does
Brake rotors are the large metal discs that spin with your wheels. When you press the brake pedal, pads clamp against the rotor's flat face to slow the car — the same way you'd stop a spinning top by pinching it. When braking causes a pulsing, shuddering, or steering-wheel wobble, the common culprit is disc thickness variation (DTV): pad material that has transferred unevenly onto the rotor surface during hard or repeated braking. As the rotor turns, the slightly thicker spots push the pads back and forth, creating the characteristic shake. People often call this 'warped rotors' — but solid steel rotors very rarely bend or warp from normal heat; the real mechanism is uneven pad-material buildup on the rotor face. The fix (new rotors and pads) is the same either way, but understanding the true cause means you can prevent it: avoid holding the brakes stationary after a hard stop, let the brakes cool before parking, and replace pads before they wear to bare metal.

Should I replace rotors and brake pads at the same time?
Yes — always replace pads and rotors together on the same axle. New pads on grooved old rotors won't seat properly, and new rotors with old hardened pads causes premature rotor wear and noise.
Can brake rotors be resurfaced instead of replaced?
Only if the rotor is above minimum thickness (stamped on the rotor hat or in the service manual). Most modern rotors are machined thin to save weight; after one resurfacing pass many fall below spec. A shop will measure first.
How long do brake rotors last?
Typically 50,000–70,000 miles, but driving style matters enormously. Lots of highway driving (gentle, gradual braking) extends life; city stop-and-go (repeated heavy braking) wears them much faster.
What brand of rotors should I buy?
For most passenger cars, Bosch QuietCast, Brembo OE-equivalent, or PowerStop are reliable mid-range choices at $30–$60 per rotor. Avoid ultra-cheap unbranded rotors — they warp faster and lack the quality control of established brands.
