Driveway Pinpoint Test
Does the car accelerate fine from a stop but bog down badly when you need more power (merging on a highway, passing, going uphill)? That load-sensitive power loss is a classic clogged fuel filter pattern โ the filter flows enough for light demand but can't keep up under high demand. Also note: has the fuel filter ever been replaced? If you don't know, and the car has more than 60,000 miles on it, the filter is a strong suspect. This test is engine-OFF: inspect under the car for the filter inline in the fuel line (usually near the gas tank or firewall).

A severely clogged filter strains the fuel pump, forcing it to work at maximum pressure constantly. This burns out the pump prematurely. Replacing just the filter now costs $20โ$40. Replacing the pump after the filter destroys it costs $300โ$600.
