Fuel Pump
moderate DIY~3h jobWhat it does
The fuel pump sits inside your gas tank (on most modern cars) and acts like a tiny electric heart — it pushes fuel from the tank, through the fuel lines, all the way to the fuel injectors at the engine. When it gets weak or dies, the engine starves for fuel. You might notice the car cranking a long time before starting (low pressure build-up), stalling at highway speed (can't keep up with fuel demand), or refusing to start at all. Fuel pumps typically last 100,000–150,000 miles but can die early from habitually running low on fuel, which causes the pump to overheat.
