What it does
The MAF sensor sits in the air intake tube between the air filter and the throttle body. It measures how much air is flowing into the engine by using a tiny heated wire — air flowing past the wire cools it, and the sensor calculates airflow from how much electricity it takes to keep the wire hot. The engine computer uses this number to calculate exactly how much fuel to inject. A dirty MAF (contaminated with oil vapor or dust) sends wrong readings, and the fuel mixture goes off — causing hesitation, rough idle, and poor fuel economy.

Can I clean my MAF sensor instead of replacing it?
Often yes. A can of CRC MAF sensor cleaner ($7–$10) can restore a dirty sensor to like-new performance. The key: spray only the sensor wires inside — never touch them with anything. Let it dry completely before reinstalling. If cleaning doesn't fix the codes, then replace the sensor.
What OBD2 codes does a bad MAF sensor throw?
P0100 (MAF circuit malfunction), P0101 (MAF performance), P0102 (low input), P0103 (high input). Get a free scan at AutoZone before buying anything — these codes point directly at the MAF sensor.
What causes a MAF sensor to get dirty?
Oil vapors from the engine's PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) system, an overly oiled aftermarket air filter (like K&N), or simply high mileage. A dirty air filter also lets particles reach the MAF — replace the air filter on schedule to protect it.
