Yes, for the short term. A rich-running condition wastes fuel and can eventually foul spark plugs or damage the catalytic converter with prolonged unburned fuel exposure, but it's not an immediate safety issue. Get it diagnosed within a few weeks β sooner if you notice a strong fuel smell or rough running.
Will P2196 clear itself?
No. Whether the cause is a lazy sensor, a leaking injector, or a stuck purge valve, the underlying hardware fault needs to be repaired before the code clears and stays cleared. It may temporarily stop being active if conditions change, but it will return.
How do I tell if it's the sensor or an actual rich condition?
Live data is the key. Watch short-term and long-term fuel trims on a scan tool β if the ECM is aggressively trimming fuel negative (trying to lean the mixture out) and it's still not enough, the engine is likely genuinely rich. If fuel trims look relatively normal while the O2 sensor reads a flat, stuck-rich voltage, the sensor itself is the more likely suspect.
Will P2196 fail an emissions inspection?
Yes, in states with OBD2-based emissions testing. A stored fault code like P2196 will cause an automatic fail, and a genuinely rich-running engine also increases hydrocarbon and CO emissions, which could fail a tailpipe test even without the stored code.
