EVAP Purge Valve
easy DIY~1h jobWritten in plain English and reviewed by the eli5cars editorial team ยท Last reviewed June 2026
What it does
Your gas tank gives off fuel vapors. Instead of venting them to the air, the car stores them in a charcoal canister and later sips them back into the engine to burn. The purge valve is the gate that opens to let those vapors in. When it sticks open or closed, the computer notices the system isn't sealing right and lights the check engine light.
