Fuel Pressure Regulator
moderate DIY~1h jobWhat it does
The fuel pressure regulator is a small spring-and-diaphragm device on the fuel rail (the metal bar that connects all the fuel injectors). Its job is to keep fuel pressure to the injectors at a steady, precise level — typically 40–60 PSI — regardless of how hard the engine is working. Think of it as a pressure relief valve that bleeds off excess fuel pressure back to the tank. If the diaphragm inside tears, raw fuel gets sucked directly into the intake manifold through the vacuum hose connection. The result: the engine runs extremely rich, you smell raw gas, see black smoke, and fuel economy tanks dramatically.
