What it means in plain English
The mass air flow (MAF) sensor measures exactly how much air is entering the engine so the ECM can calculate the right amount of fuel to inject. P0102 is different from the range/performance code P0101 β it means the MAF circuit's voltage signal is at or near zero, well below the minimum the ECM ever expects to see, even at idle. This usually points to something more clear-cut than a slightly-off reading: a heavily contaminated sensor, a broken wire, a bad connector, or a sensor that has failed outright. Because the ECM can't trust a signal this low, it typically falls back on a default airflow estimate for fueling, which usually causes rough running, poor fuel economy, and a noticeable loss of power.

#1 Dirty or contaminated MAF sensor sensing element
most likelyFix: The MAF sensor's hot-wire or hot-film element gets coated with oil vapor from the PCV system or dust that bypasses the air filter, which can drop its output enough to trigger a circuit-low code in some cases. Remove the sensor and spray it with a dedicated MAF sensor cleaner β never carburetor or brake cleaner, which damage the sensing element β let it dry fully, and reinstall. This is the cheapest thing to try first.

#3 Failed MAF sensor with dead internal circuitry
likelyFix: If the sensor tests clean and the wiring is intact, the MAF sensor's internal circuitry has likely failed and needs replacement. Confirm with a scan tool by watching the live MAF reading β a dead sensor shows 0 or a flat, unchanging value even as you rev the engine.

possibleFix: Less commonly, a blown fuse feeding the MAF sensor or a corroded ground connection can starve the circuit of power, producing a low-voltage reading that looks like a sensor fault. Check the fuse box for a blown MAF- or PCM-related fuse before assuming the sensor itself is bad.

Will cleaning the MAF sensor fix P0102?
