Also check for a growing puddle directly under the middle of the front of the car after the car sits overnight.

    If ignored: A steering rack that runs low on fluid loses power assist progressively — the wheel gets heavier to turn, especially at low speed and parking. If the pump runs dry chasing a rack leak, you can damage the pump too, turning one repair into two. In rare cases a sudden total loss of fluid causes a sudden loss of power assist while driving, which is startling and can affect control during a maneuver.

    Worn pump shaft seal(likely)

    With the engine off, locate the power steering pump (belt-driven, usually has a reservoir cap on top or nearby, marked for power steering fluid). Wipe the pump housing and the area directly beneath it clean, then start the engine and turn the wheel lock to lock a few times. Recheck the pump housing for fresh wetness, and look at the pulley — dried or fresh fluid flung outward in a ring pattern around the pulley (from spinning) is a strong sign of a pump shaft seal leak rather than a rack or hose leak.

    If ignored: A leaking pump seal gets worse gradually, and a pump running low on fluid starts to whine loudly on turns — that whine is the sound of the pump cavitating (sucking air) which accelerates internal wear. A pump that fails completely means an abrupt loss of power steering assist.

    Look at the rubber boots covering the inner tie rod joints, near where they meet the steering rack. A torn, cracked, or missing boot lets rack fluid weep out slowly at that joint even if the rack seals themselves are fine, and it also lets dirt and water in, which accelerates wear on the joint. Compare both sides — a boot that looks intact on one side but torn or missing on the other confirms this as the leak point rather than a general rack seal failure.

    If ignored: A torn boot alone is a cheap fix, but ignoring it lets road grit and moisture into the tie rod joint, which wears the joint out and can eventually cause steering play or a joint failure — a far more expensive and safety-relevant repair than replacing a $10 boot early.
