Steering Rack (Rack and Pinion)
hard DIY~6h jobWhat it does
The steering rack (officially 'rack and pinion') is the mechanism that translates turning the steering wheel into side-to-side movement of the front wheels. Inside is a metal bar with teeth (the rack) that moves left and right when a round gear (the pinion) attached to the steering column rotates. The ends of the rack connect to your tie rods, which push or pull the wheels. When the rack wears out, its internal seals leak power steering fluid, the teeth wear unevenly causing play or looseness, and you may feel wandering, clunking, or a need to constantly correct the steering.
