Tie Rod End
moderate DIY~2h jobWhat it does
Your steering wheel connects to the front wheels through a series of rods and joints. The tie rod ends are the ball-and-socket joints at the outer ends of those rods — they allow the wheel to both steer left/right and move up/down with the suspension. When the socket wears out, the joint develops play (looseness). This translates into imprecise steering, wandering, and clunking when you hit bumps. Your wheels may also go out of alignment because the tie rod length controls your toe angle.
