Think of ABS like a backup safety net: your normal brakes are the primary system, and ABS only kicks in during a hard stop to pulse the brakes faster than your foot could. The most common trigger is a wheel speed sensor — a small sensor at each wheel that tells the ABS computer how fast that wheel is spinning — going bad, dirty, or losing its signal, which makes the system unable to trust its own data. A second common cause is surprisingly unrelated to brakes at all: a corroded or loose battery cable connection can cause voltage dips that the ABS module misreads as a fault, lighting the warning even though nothing brake-related is actually wrong. Third, on many vehicles, a low brake fluid level sensor built into the master cylinder reservoir will trigger the ABS light (often alongside the brake warning light) simply because fluid has dropped below a minimum threshold.

Faulty or dirty wheel speed sensor(most likely)
Drive the car briefly at low speed in a safe, empty area and note whether the ABS light stays on constantly or comes on intermittently, especially when turning or going over bumps — an intermittent light that flickers with wheel movement points strongly to a wheel speed sensor with a loose connector or debris on the sensor tip. If you're comfortable safely accessing each wheel, look at the sensor and its tone ring (a toothed ring near the hub) for visible metal shavings, dirt buildup, or a damaged/cut sensor wire — any of these will disrupt the signal and trigger the light. An auto parts store can read the ABS fault code for free, and codes usually identify which specific wheel's sensor is at fault.
If ignored: Without a working wheel speed sensor at even one corner, the ABS system can't safely modulate braking during a hard stop or on a slippery surface, meaning that wheel could lock up and skid exactly when you need control most. Many vehicles also disable traction control and stability control alongside ABS when this fault is present, removing multiple layers of accident-prevention technology at once.

Corroded or loose battery connection(likely)
Pop the hood and inspect both battery terminals for white, blue, or greenish crusty corrosion, or a cable clamp that wiggles when you try to move it by hand (engine off). A loose or corroded connection causes brief voltage drops, especially when the starter or other high-draw components engage, and the ABS module can interpret those dips as an internal fault and set the light. A telling clue: does the ABS light sometimes turn off after the battery is disconnected and reconnected, or after driving for a while, only to come back later? That on-again-off-again pattern is typical of a marginal electrical connection rather than a genuinely failed sensor.
If ignored: A voltage-related ABS fault caused by bad connections tends to recur and can eventually affect starting reliability and other electronics too, not just ABS. It's also one of the cheapest possible causes to rule out — cleaning corroded terminals costs nothing but a wire brush and some time, so it's worth checking before spending money on sensor diagnostics.

Low brake fluid level sensor(possible)
Locate the brake fluid reservoir (usually near the back of the engine bay on the driver's side, translucent plastic with MIN/MAX markings) and check the level. If it's below the MIN line, that alone can trigger both the brake warning light and the ABS light on many vehicles, since the ABS module treats fluid level as a system health signal. Also check whether the level has dropped recently — a low level from normal brake pad wear (fluid drops slightly as pads wear down) is common and not urgent, but a sudden drop or fluid that needed topping off more than once suggests an actual leak that needs finding.
If ignored: If the low fluid is from gradual pad wear, topping it off is a simple, low-cost fix. But if it's from an active leak in the brake system, ignoring the warning risks the fluid dropping further until you lose braking assist entirely on that circuit — treat any unexplained brake fluid drop as urgent until the cause is confirmed.

Can I still drive with the ABS light on?
Yes, in most cases your regular brakes still work fully — ABS only assists during hard braking or slippery conditions. But drive more cautiously, especially in rain or snow, since you've lost the anti-lock safety net. Get it diagnosed soon, and if the brake warning light is also on (not just ABS), treat that combination as more urgent since it can indicate an actual brake system problem.
Why did my ABS and traction control lights come on at the same time?
This is extremely common and expected — traction control and stability control both rely on the same wheel speed sensor data as ABS. When the ABS module detects a fault and disables itself, it typically disables traction and stability control as well, since they can't function safely without reliable wheel speed input. Fixing the underlying ABS cause usually clears all three lights together.
Will the ABS light turn itself off?
Sometimes, if the cause was momentary — like a brief connector glitch or a puddle temporarily confusing a sensor. But if the light stays on for more than one drive cycle (ignition off and back on), there's a stored fault that needs a code reader to properly diagnose, and it won't self-clear on its own.
