What it does
A wheel speed sensor sits at each wheel hub and constantly reports how fast that wheel is spinning to your car's computer, using a small toothed ring (called a tone ring or reluctor ring) that passes by the sensor tip as the wheel turns. The ABS, traction control, and stability control systems all depend on comparing the speed of all four wheels against each other in real time — if one wheel is spinning much slower or faster than the others, that's the signal a wheel is skidding, and the computer intervenes. When a sensor fails, gets coated in brake dust or metal debris, or its wiring gets damaged, it can no longer send a reliable signal, and the safety systems that depend on it shut themselves off rather than act on bad data.

How many wheel speed sensors does a car have?
