P0300moderate severityGenerally driveableP0300 Code: Random Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
What it means in plain English
Your engine fires each cylinder in a specific order, like a drummer keeping a beat. P0300 means the beat keeps skipping — but the computer can't tell which drummer is missing the hit. One or more cylinders are misfiring randomly, meaning fuel isn't burning cleanly. The engine runs rough, may shake, and can damage the catalytic converter if left unchecked.
Most likely causes — ranked
#1 Worn or fouled spark plugs
most likelyFix: Inspect all spark plugs; replace the full set. On most 4-cylinder engines this is a straightforward DIY job — remove the ignition coils, unscrew the plugs, gap and install new ones. Torque to spec.
#2 Failed ignition coil (one or more)
likelyFix: Swap individual coils between cylinders to see if the misfire follows the coil. Replace the failing coil(s). On coil-on-plug engines each cylinder has its own coil, making isolation easy.
#3 Vacuum leak (intake manifold gasket, PCV hose, or throttle body)
likelyFix: Spray carburetor cleaner carefully around intake manifold seams and vacuum hoses while engine idles. If RPM changes, you found the leak. Repair the specific hose or gasket. A smoke test at a shop finds leaks definitively.
#4 Dirty or failing fuel injectors
possibleFix: Try a bottle of quality fuel injector cleaner in the gas tank first ($10–$15). If misfires persist, have injectors professionally cleaned or replaced one at a time.
#5 Low fuel pressure (weak fuel pump or clogged fuel filter)
possibleFix: Have fuel pressure tested at idle and under load. If pressure is below spec, replace the fuel filter first (if serviceable on your car) then the fuel pump if needed.
