Fuel Injector

What it does
A fuel injector is a tiny electronically controlled valve that pulses open and closed many times per second, spraying a precise mist of fuel into the engine's air stream. Each cylinder has its own injector. The nozzle opening is barely the size of a pinhead โ so tiny that even small deposits of fuel varnish (from heat-soaked fuel sitting in a parked hot engine) can partially clog it. A clogged injector sprays too little fuel or sprays it as a stream rather than a mist, causing a rough-running cylinder and a hesitation when you accelerate.

Frequently asked questions
Can I clean fuel injectors myself?
Yes โ add a bottle of Chevron Techron Concentrate ($10โ$15) to your gas tank and run it through. For more thorough cleaning, an OBD-port injector cleaning kit ($50โ$80) feeds cleaner directly to the rail while the engine runs. These methods fix mild deposits. Severely clogged or leaking injectors need professional ultrasonic cleaning or replacement.
When should I replace fuel injectors vs. cleaning them?
Clean first โ most dirty injectors respond to cleaning. Replace if the injector tests show it is stuck (no flow or constant leak), the tip is physically damaged, or cleaning does not resolve the performance problem. Aftermarket injectors are $25โ$60 each.
How often should I use fuel injector cleaner?
Every 10,000โ15,000 miles (or once a year) is a good maintenance interval. Premium fuels often have detergents that help keep injectors clean. Using top-tier gasoline (Shell, Chevron, Costco) reduces deposit buildup compared to discount-brand fuels.
