Driveway Pinpoint Test
With the car parked and safely in neutral or park, engine running, watch the engine itself (open the hood) rather than feeling the cabin โ does the whole engine visibly rock or jump more than a slight, steady vibration when you rev it gently a few times? Also, from inside the car, shift from park to drive and to reverse while stopped with your foot on the brake: a noticeable clunk or extra lurch when shifting, combined with shaking at idle, is a strong motor mount signal. A visual check (if accessible) for a mount that looks cracked, separated, or where the rubber has visibly split from the metal bracket confirms it.

A failed motor mount lets the engine shift position under acceleration or braking, which can stress attached hoses, wiring, and the exhaust system, sometimes causing secondary damage. In more severe failures, an engine that's no longer properly secured can shift enough to affect belt alignment or, in rare extreme cases, contact other components while driving.
