PCV Valve (Positive Crankcase Ventilation Valve)

easy DIY~0.25h job

What it does

Your engine creates blow-by gases — combustion pressure that leaks past the piston rings into the crankcase (the bottom half of the engine, where the oil lives). These gases contain oil vapor and fuel vapor and need to be vented somewhere. The PCV valve is a tiny one-way valve — usually the size of a large vitamin capsule — that routes these gases back into the intake manifold to be burned in the engine instead of venting to the atmosphere. When the PCV valve clogs or sticks, the crankcase pressure has nowhere to go. It forces oil past every seal and gasket it can find — causing oil leaks, blue smoke, and a rough idle. Best part: the PCV valve costs $5–$15 and takes 5 minutes to replace.
