Modern cars have a dozen-plus computer modules β engine, transmission, ABS, body control, instrument cluster β all talking to each other constantly over a shared communication network (usually CAN bus). The ECM/PCM (engine/powertrain control module) is the central hub that most other modules depend on for data. U0100 means another module on the network reported that it lost communication with the ECM/PCM β it's not receiving the messages it expects. This is a network/wiring code, not a sensor code, and depending on the vehicle it can cause anything from a single warning light to multiple systems going into a limp or disabled state, since so many modules rely on ECM data.

Physical damage from a repair, rodent chewing, water intrusion, or a corroded connector anywhere along that run can disrupt communication with the ECM specifically or the whole network broadly. This requires a shop with a wiring diagram and a scan tool capable of network testing to isolate the exact break point β it is not a quick DIY diagnosis on most vehicles.
#3 ECM/PCM has no power or ground, or has failed internally
likelyFix: If the ECM itself isn't getting power or ground, or has failed internally, every other module correctly reports it as unreachable. Check ECM power and ground circuits first, since a blown fuse or corroded ground strap is far cheaper than a control module. #4 Blown fuse feeding the ECM or the communication network itself

Is it safe to drive with a U0100 code?
No β treat this one cautiously. Because so many systems depend on ECM communication, a vehicle with active U0100 can experience stalling, loss of power steering assist, transmission limp mode, or the car may not start again once shut off. If the vehicle is currently running and drivable, get it to a shop rather than continuing to drive on it.
Will U0100 clear itself?
Sometimes temporarily, if the cause was a marginal battery connection or a brief voltage dip β the code can go inactive after a battery disconnect/reconnect or terminal cleaning. But if there's a genuine wiring fault, blown fuse, or failed module, the code returns as soon as the condition repeats.

This is the hallmark of a communication code rather than a simple sensor code. Because the ECM is a hub other modules rely on, losing contact with it can cause power steering assist, transmission shift quality, cruise control, and dashboard gauges to all act up simultaneously. If you see several unrelated warning lights appear at once, that pattern points strongly toward a network/communication issue like U0100 rather than several coincidental component failures.
