What it does
Your car battery is a 12-volt power pack made of lead plates and acid that stores the electrical energy needed to spin the starter motor — which in turn cranks the engine. Once the engine is running, the alternator takes over and keeps the battery charged. Batteries fail because the lead plates corrode and the acid weakens over years of heat cycles. When the battery can no longer deliver enough current to spin the starter, all you hear is rapid clicking (insufficient current) or complete silence (battery totally dead).

Can I get my battery tested for free?
Yes. AutoZone, O'Reilly, Advance Auto Parts, and most Walmart auto centers test car batteries for free. They will load-test the battery and tell you its current capacity vs. original rating. Get tested before spending money — a new battery won't fix a bad alternator.
How long does a car battery last?
Typically 3–5 years in northern climates; 2–4 years in hot climates like Arizona and Florida (heat is the #1 battery killer). If your battery is over 4 years old and you're having starting trouble, proactively test it before it strands you.
Can I replace a car battery myself?
