Car Shaking When Accelerating: What's Wrong?

When you press the gas, your engine makes power and sends it to the wheels through a series of shafts and joints. If any of those joints are worn out, the shaft wobbles like a wobbly axle on a toy car — and you feel that wobble in the whole vehicle. Separately, if the engine itself is firing unevenly (one cylinder not doing its job), the uneven pulses shake the engine, and those shakes travel up through the mounts into the cabin. Acceleration-only shaking almost always means something in the drivetrain or engine is losing its smooth motion.

Find a quiet parking lot. Make a slow tight circle, full steering lock, at about 5 mph. If you hear or feel a rhythmic clicking or clunking as you turn while accelerating, that is a classic outer CV joint failure. Also inspect the CV axle boot (the black rubber accordion near each front wheel) — if it's split open with grease splattered around it, the joint has lost its lubrication and is failing.
