Driveway Pinpoint Test
Find a quiet parking lot. Make a slow tight circle, full steering lock, at about 5 mph. If you hear or feel a rhythmic clicking or clunking as you turn while accelerating, that is a classic outer CV joint failure. Also inspect the CV axle boot (the black rubber accordion near each front wheel) — if it's split open with grease splattered around it, the joint has lost its lubrication and is failing.

A CV joint that snaps at highway speed causes immediate loss of drive power to that wheel. You'll be stranded, and the broken shaft can damage the transmission housing — adding $500–$1,500 to the repair bill.
