Driveway Pinpoint Test
With the engine OFF, open the hood and locate the motor mounts โ typically one on each side of the engine, bolted to the frame. Grab the engine by the valve cover (use a rag so you don't burn yourself โ do this cold) and try to physically rock it side to side. More than half an inch of movement means the mount is collapsed. Also look for visible cracking or oil-soaked rubber on the mount itself. If the shaking gets noticeably worse when you engage the AC or put the car in Drive at a stoplight, that strongly points to a worn mount.

A collapsed motor mount lets the engine rock excessively. Over time it strains radiator hoses, CV axles, exhaust joints, and wiring harnesses โ turning a $350 repair into a $1,500+ chain of failures. In severe cases the engine can rock far enough to contact the firewall.
