Valve Cover Gasket

What it does
The valve cover is the plastic or metal lid on top of your engine that covers the valves and camshafts. A rubber gasket seals the edge where the cover meets the cylinder head. Engine oil lubricates the valve train underneath, and it's the gasket's job to keep that oil inside. When the gasket hardens or cracks with age, oil weeps out along the seam. You'll see brown crusty oil residue on the outside of the engine top, and if the leak drips onto the exhaust manifold below, you'll smell burning oil and see wisps of smoke from under the hood.

Frequently asked questions
Is a valve cover gasket leak serious?
It depends on how fast it's leaking. A minor seep (small oily residue, no drips on the ground) can be monitored while you plan the repair. A significant leak (drips on driveway, burning oil smell regularly, noticeable oil level drop between changes) needs prompt repair โ it's also a fire risk if oil reaches the exhaust.
Can I drive with a leaking valve cover gasket?
Briefly, yes, if the leak is minor and you monitor the oil level. Check the dipstick weekly and top up as needed. But don't put it off indefinitely โ the leak will worsen, and oil on the exhaust creates a burning smell inside the car and a fire hazard.
Why is the labor cost so high for a cheap gasket?
The gasket itself is $10โ$30. But on many modern engines, the intake manifold, spark plug wires, or other components have to be removed to access the valve cover. Labor is 1โ3 hours depending on the engine layout โ that's the bulk of the shop cost.
