How do I clean the throttle body myself?

1) Engine OFF. 2) Remove the large intake air hose from the throttle body (usually one clamp). 3) Spray throttle body cleaner on a rag and wipe inside the bore and around the butterfly valve. 4) Use a soft brush for stubborn buildup. 5) Do NOT spray directly onto electric actuator motors — they can be damaged. 6) Reattach the hose and start the engine. The idle may be rough for 1–2 minutes while the ECU relearns the new air flow.

How often should the throttle body be cleaned?

Every 30,000–60,000 miles, or whenever you notice rough idle or idle stalling. Vehicles with high oil consumption (worn piston rings or valve seals) tend to foul the throttle body faster and may need cleaning every 15,000–20,000 miles.

After cleaning the throttle body, my idle is worse. Why?

Modern electronic throttle bodies (drive-by-wire) use a closed-loop idle control that has 'learned' to compensate for the dirty throttle. After cleaning, the ECU's learned compensation is now wrong. Allow the engine to idle for 10–15 minutes without touching the gas — this lets the ECU relearn the correct idle position. On some vehicles, disconnecting the battery for 30 minutes performs a full idle relearn reset.

When should I replace the throttle body instead of cleaning it?

Cleaning is the first step. Replace if: the butterfly valve or shaft is physically worn and causes an air leak, the internal position sensor has failed (usually throws a P0120–P0124 code), or cleaning doesn't improve idle within one or two cleaning attempts.

The throttle body is the gateway between the air intake and the engine — a disc-shaped valve that opens when you press the gas pedal, letting more air in so the engine can burn more fuel and make more power. Over time, carbon deposits from oil vapors (the engine breathes its own fumes through the PCV system) coat the inside of the throttle body with a black, sticky gunk. This narrows the air passage, confuses the idle speed sensor, and causes the engine to stumble, idle rough, or stall. The fix is often as simple as cleaning it with a $10 can of spray cleaner.
