What it does
The radiator is a grid of thin aluminum tubes filled with coolant, mounted at the front of the car where it gets maximum airflow. Hot coolant from the engine flows in one side, air blows through the fins, and the coolant exits the other side 20–40°F cooler. It's the same principle as the cooling fins on a motorcycle engine — surface area exposed to air removes heat. When the radiator leaks (cracked plastic end tank, corroded tube), or becomes clogged with rust and deposits (from years of neglected coolant), it can't shed enough heat — and the engine overheats.

How do I know if my radiator needs replacing vs. just flushing?
Flushing addresses internal buildup. Replacement addresses physical leaks (cracks, holes in the plastic tanks, damaged tubes) and collapse of the internal channels. Have a shop do a cooling system pressure test — it will reveal leaks precisely. Flushing is maintenance; leaks require replacement.
How long does a radiator last?
Modern aluminum-core radiators typically last 8–12 years or 100,000–150,000 miles with proper coolant maintenance. The plastic end tanks are the first to fail — they become brittle with age and can crack under the pressure of a hot engine.
Can I use stop-leak for a radiator leak?
Bar's Leaks or similar products can seal minor pinhole leaks temporarily to get you to a shop. They are not a permanent fix and can clog heater cores and thermostat passages if overused. For a cracked tank or significant leak, replace the radiator.
