Oil Pan Gasket

moderate DIY~2.5h job

What it does

The oil pan is the metal bowl bolted to the very bottom of the engine that holds your engine oil when the engine is not running. A gasket (or on some engines, an RTV silicone bead) seals the edge where the pan meets the engine block. When that seal fails, oil slowly drips from the bottom of the engine — usually leaving a dark oval-shaped puddle centered under the front of your car. Unlike the valve cover gasket (on top), the oil pan gasket is on the underside, so you usually need to raise the car to see it.
