Ignition Switch

moderate DIY~2h job

What it does

The ignition switch is the electrical control behind your key cylinder or push-button. When you turn the key or push the button, the ignition switch is what sends electrical signals to the starter, ECU, and rest of the car's systems. On older cars it's a physical switch connected directly to the key cylinder; on modern cars it's an electronic module. When it fails, it can't properly signal 'Start' to the rest of the car, so you get no crank, intermittent no-starts, or the engine suddenly dying because the switch drops the 'Run' signal mid-drive.
