Head Gasket
hard DIY~16h jobWhat it does
The head gasket is a thin metal-reinforced seal sandwiched between the engine block (bottom half, where the pistons live) and the cylinder head (top half, where the valves are). It has to seal three completely different things simultaneously: combustion pressure from the cylinders, engine oil passages, and coolant passages. If the gasket fails (usually from overheating or age), those fluids can mix — oil gets into the coolant, or coolant gets into the cylinders and burns as white smoke. This is one of the most expensive and serious engine repairs.
