What it does
Brake lines are the rigid metal tubes (with short flexible rubber sections near each wheel) that carry pressurized brake fluid from the master cylinder to the calipers or wheel cylinders at each corner. They form a sealed system — press the pedal, and that pressure transmits almost instantly through the fluid inside these lines to squeeze the brakes. Because the metal sections run along the underside of the car, they're constantly exposed to road salt, moisture, and debris, which over years can corrode a line from the outside until it develops a pinhole leak or ruptures. The flexible rubber sections near the wheels can also crack or bulge with age. Any leak in a brake line causes a loss of fluid and, with it, a loss of hydraulic pressure — which is why this is treated as a safety-critical repair, not a routine maintenance item.

No — a leaking brake line means the sealed hydraulic system is losing fluid and pressure, which can progress to a partial or total loss of braking at that wheel or circuit with little warning. Why do brake lines rust and fail more in some regions?
Regions that use road salt for winter ice control see dramatically higher rates of brake line corrosion, since salt accelerates rust on the exposed metal lines running under the car. Vehicles in salt-belt states often need brake line repairs years earlier than the same models in dry climates, even with otherwise identical maintenance.
Does replacing a brake line require bleeding the brakes?
